Round 14 Support Thread!

Hello, fellow Hikago fans! As you've probably seen, sign ups (DW and LJ) for round 14 of [livejournal.com profile] blind_go have arrived, and you guys know what that means: lots and lots of flailing, starting now! For anyone new to our challenge here, this is the place we come to chat, flail, cry, procrastinate, plot, ask and answer questions, and support each other.

Anonymouse is encouraged for writers, especially if there could be clues to your fic, but obviously isn't required, and comments will be screened during the guessing period just in case. Participants also often use their [livejournal.com profile] blind_go ID's once they get them, which adds a fun twist to things and you're certainly welcome to do that as well. ^_~

Writers: Complaints about lack of progress, procrastinating, requests for ideas, and more are all awesome.

Readers: You guys are more than welcome to participate too! Leave your reassurances, fanfic ideas, and helpful random spam here.

Go go Hikago! \o/

Edit: Comments should hopefully be unscreened now for posterity. If they're not, poke at me and I'll take are of it. :D

HELLO FRIENDS I AM HERE.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-23 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I wrote 4000 words in a day, and now I'm stuuuuck. Like, totally. x_X

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think my fic will be too long o_O. Well, if I even manage to finish it.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I have the same problem. Well, I'm pretty sure I'll get this finished, but I'm equally sure it won't fit into 8000 words. The word count atm is 6396 and there's still quite a lot left...

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Can always make it a multi-parter, as long as you can find a place to split it?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I totally sympathize. Except, you know, I've written 0 words and I'm totally stuck. It's the same, right? XD

(Anonymous) 2013-08-24 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a pretty good idea... I think it could be logically divided into three parts. Is this allowed?

[identity profile] trixie-chick.livejournal.com 2013-08-24 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it's fine, especially as you say they are logical divisions... (ie, like lord of the rings is three books but you really can't say that the fellowship of the ring is "self-contained"...) that's completely fine.

the last thing we wanna do is discourage people from producing a lot and submitting, so...!!!

yaywriting!!!

I have the perfect crossover fusion idea but I can't squee about it with anyone because blind_go ;_;

Akira is Sozin; Hikaru is Roku; Sai is the Northern Water Tribe ghost who occasionally possesses hapless Avatar Shindou and makes with the waterbending (backstory irony plus plus!).

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually thinking about that TBC solution, but luckily it seems I don't have to do it that way. And as I don't atm moment have any other fic ideas, everything's fine. (...is that the sound of rapid plotbunnies closing in on me, now that I went and said that aloud...?)

Probing general opinions. Canonically, the characters are most often referred to by surnames. Touya, Shindo, Waya. Of course, fic is different. I've seen fic written two ways and can't decide which is best. So if you were reading a fic narrated by Touya Akira, do you prefer the text to refer to him as Touya or as Akira? "Akira thought it might be safer" or "Touya thought it might be safer"?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Sai would be a magnificent water bender! That fits him very well! And it really would be funny-- "You're from the fire nation! How do you water bend so well?!" --poor Akira is forever confused.

Yay indeed! Wrote until 3 am yesterday. XD
And great, thanks!

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 06:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't even seen Avatar but I'd kinda want to read this.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, pretty much. xD I hope you're getting ideas?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I'd say it could go either way. Whatever you choose would probably sound just fine. Akira is an only child from a traditional family, so I would think that it would be reasonable to assume that he thinks of himself as "Touya." On the other hand, if he's being referred to as "Akira" by the other people in the story or something, well, it wouldn't be out of place or anything for him to think of himself as Akira.

I guess the only advice I'd offer is... listen to your muse. What feels more comfortable? What's going to be easier for you to stay consistent using?

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd tend to go with personal names for PoV characters in third-person narration - it feels odd for Akira to think of himself as Touya, when Touya-san is also what people call his parents. But you could go either way with how he thinks of Shindou Hikaru, thought I'd tend towards Akira-PoV narration using 'Shindou' and Hikaru-PoV narration using either 'Akira' or 'Touya'. This also shifts if they're in a relationship, though, since the personal name is considered more intimate in Japanese and thus they'd be more likely to think of a lover by 'Akira' or 'Hikaru'.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Either goes. Personally I use Touya more, but it's not a big deal.

(Anonymous) 2013-08-25 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
It's even better because Hikaru is such a terrible fire bender! there may or may not be a point where akira gets goaded into an agni kai and then sai whips his ass and akira is so many 'WHAT.'

also, there is something even more poetic about a waterbender committing suicide by drowning ;__;
